Adriano keen to help Messi

Adriano has enthused that he and his Barcelona teammates will be doing everything possible to help Lionel Messi break Gerd Muller’s record.

The 25-year-old is on 84 goals for the calendar year and is now just one behind Muller’s world record of 85 goals scored during the 12 months of 1972.

“We will be with him and will try to do everything possible towards that tomorrow. The goal is to go out and win the match and to see Messi equal the record,” declared Adriano at today’s Press conference, ahead of Wednesday’s closing Champions League match at home to Benfica.

“It is best not to think about it and to not be obsessed, instead to play normally. Leo thinks the same, whilst we want to help.

“But, Leo is demonstrating each season that he wants to do his best and in seeing this, especially in light of what he has already achieved, it makes us want to give our best in every game to help make this possible. He is a phenomenon.”

Messi’s last two goals came during the weekend win over Athletic Bilbao which saw Barca break the record for the best ever start to a Spanish Primera Division season.

“This team can be compared to the Barcelona of Guardiola, I think so. We are at a very good level, but we still have room for improvement.

“This is what we have tried in every game so far. Last year with Pep we were playing well, but did not have the same luck with the ball.”

The player is rumoured to be another on the club’s agenda for a contract renewal.

“For my football I am proving that I would sign here for many more years. I think we have had some conversations, things are not very clear, but there is interest, certainly from me, and I also think from the club.”
