Official: Espanyol appoint Aguirre

Espanyol have confirmed that Javier Aguirre has agreed to become their new Coach, replacing Mauricio Pochettino.

After a poor start to the season left Los Pericos bottom of the table with nine points from the first 13 games played, Pochettino departed on Monday by mutual consent.

Aguirre soon emerged as the frontrunner to come in, but despite apparently reaching an agreement with President Joan Collet on Monday evening, saw his appointment delayed.

This was reportedly while the club’s board delayed approving his arrival and asked Collet to hold talks with Marcelino Garcia Toral.

However, former Atletico Madrid and Real Zaragoza boss Aguirre has been selected, with the news confirmed today via a statement issued on the club’s official website.

“Javier Aguirre and Espanyol have reached an agreement for the Mexican to be the Coach of the blanc-i-blau until the end of the season,” began the posting.

“Aguirre arrives accompanied by Alfredo Tena as assistant Coach and Juan Iribarren as physio, who have accompanied him on all his past experiences as a Coach.”

The statement also confirms that the former Mexico head Coach will arrive in Catalonia in the coming hours to finalise terms on his contract, before being presented to the media on Thursday at Cornella-El Prat.

Aguirre will hold his first training session with the players on Thursday after that Press conference, meaning that B team boss Raul Longhi has been confirmed as overseeing the side’s midweek Copa del Rey test against Sevilla.
