Oltra wants more from Depor

Jose Luis Oltra is delighted Deportivo are out of the relegation zone, but has warned his players that they need to ‘take a further step forward’.

Depor have only won once in La Liga since the opening round of season, but a 1-1 draw away to Athletic Bilbao at the weekend proved enough for them to edge out of the relegation zone.

“The point was very good, theirs is a difficult ground to play at,” reflected Oltra to AS today.

“The positive is how the team competed, they were serious, disciplined, well positioned and hardworking. We must be good in offering consistency and then winning at home.

“Did moving out of the relegation help psychologically? Sure. Emotionally it has helped, but we have to take a further step forward. If the League ended today then our goal would be met and we would all be very happy.

“I’ve told the players that they are not yet doing everything right and we have had a dose of bad luck too, but we are out of the relegation zone. However, I do not fear for complacency, I see that this team can give more.

“Right now we have fewer points than we do games played. The emotions are better than the results have been, but this is about points and classifications. We have to improve and grow.

“The assessments are made at the end of the season. If I had to assess the team now I would say we have done enough as we are. I like what the players are doing right now, but the footnote would be that they are progressing but need improvement.”
