Pochettino: Focus on football now

Mauricio Pochettino is keen for Espanyol to refocus on football this week, whilst he also confirms that Mubarak Wakaso has been spoken to.

Espanyol host Getafe this Sunday lunchtime bottom of the table and after a busy week off the pitch, with Presidential elections taking place. For Pochettino, it is crucial that focus now returns to the field.

“We must unite and be more together than ever before, because the three points are critical,” commented the Argentine today.

“We have had a busy week [with the elections] and hardly spoken about football.

“Getafe are an opponent that is complicated, hard, with people who can play in pressure situations and with a lot of experience.

“To fight this, we must carry the weight of the game, because they will come out very quickly to counter us and so we must be attentive to watching the defence.”

Espanyol player Wakaso drew headlines yesterday with his outburst that match officials in Spain are racist.

“The captains and I have talked with him. He is in the process of becoming aware of what has happened.

“He is feisty but noble and when things are explained to him he will understand. He lives on the edge, on and off the field.

“One cannot qualify that collective refereeing is of this matter [racism] and he knows that. He has spoken with emotion and what was inside.”
