Depor ‘not attacking kamikazes’

Jose Luis Oltra has hit out at the Press for unfairly criticising his Deportivo outfit as being overly focused on attacking football.

Depor fell to a 2-0 home defeat last weekend against Levante to make it two consecutive defeats with seven goals conceded.

The reverse also extended their current run to just one win from the last 12 played in all competitions. Depor have also only managed two clean sheets this season and only Rayo Vallecano have conceded more.

“It is the first time or one of the first few times that a Coach is being criticised for being brave,” complained Oltra to reporters today.

“We have been labelled by the media. While I like to have the ball and be offensive, I have never told my players to play with the defensive line in midfield. Kamikazes we are not.

“The goals we have conceded are specific things and concrete, the team does not have to change a great deal or go a great distance in between the lines.

“We are aiming to minimise the defeats, improve in attack and defensively from set pieces. The form is not as bad as has been painted nor the table and the results, we have to persevere.”

Sunday sees Deportivo travel out to the Basque Country to face Athletic Bilbao.

“They go from low to high, whilst they are not in the situation that everyone expected them to be in, given the expectations from what they did last year.

“They are in need, but so are we. By necessity, though, we cannot win. We can win because we have more success and will overcome.

“In attitude we can overcome, in enthusiasm and concentration.”
