Benitez plots Falcao swoop

Chelsea’s interest in Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao has apparently intensified with the arrival of Rafa Benitez.

The former Valencia, Liverpool and Inter tactician took charge of the London club in midweek following the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo.

According to The Daily Mail, Benitez’s battle plan involves offloading a number of players, including Hilario, Paulo Ferreira and Florent Malouda, in order to free up funds for a January spending spree.

His two prime targets would be Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Andre Schurrle, and Falcao.

‘El Tigre’ – currently the third top scorer in La Liga with 10 goals this season – has been heavily linked with the Blues for some time.

Journalist Guillem Ballague claimed on Tuesday that the player was on the verge of making the move on the very night that he smashed a hat trick past Chelsea in the European Super Cup three months ago.
