Fontaine: Messi can equal my record

Former France striker Just Fontaine believes Lionel Messi is the only man who can equal his record 13 goals at a World Cup Finals.

The 79-year-old achieved the feat in Sweden in the 1958 edition of the tournament, but cannot see any other player in the world besides the Argentine getting anywhere near his exploits.

“He is the only player capable of scoring the same number of goals as me. He is the personification of a player of his size, small in stature and light.” said Fontaine, who was being inducted into the Hall of National and International Football Fame in Mexico.

Moroccan-born Fontaine spent his club career in France with Nice and Stade Reims after a move from Casablanca in 1953, but he was in doubt he would have enjoyed playing with Messi in the current Barcelona side.

“If I had worn a Barca shirt then I’d have scored more than 100 goals,” he claimed, before maintaining that both Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi ‘do not play the same for their countries as they are not surrounded by great players.”
