Athletic Bilbao midfielder Markel Susaeta said he feared his side was going to throw the game away against Sevilla.

The Basques lost a Europe League game to Lyon in midweek and Susaeta was wary of a repeat against the Andalusians after Ander Herrera picked up a second yellow card and Alvaro Negredo converted from the penalty spot.

However, Marcelo Bielsa’s men hung on to record a 2-1 victory and move away from the lower reaches of the table after a disappointing start to the season.

“In every game this year something has happened to us and within a minute it almost cost us with the sending off and the penalty,” Susaeta told a Press conference.

“Even so, we showed the character this team has and worked very hard, although the Valencia game was at the back of our minds.

“We were winning there and after another dismissal they got into our box and punished us, although fortunately this time we had a bit more luck but I thought it was going to be like against Lyon.”

Susaeta went on to praise the support the team has received from the fans and reckoned the players were now getting their just rewards for the football they have played recently.

“In the last few games we’ve played really well and on Thursday against Lyon we played the same as we did today. The defence was good and we knew we had to build on the three points we got against Granada.

“We worked very hard and managed to get another win,” he added.
