Diego: No Atleti contact

Wolfsburg midfielder Diego denies that he has been in contact with Atletico Madrid regarding a potential return to the Vicente Calderon.

The Brazilian playmaker had a very successful loan spell with Los Colcheneros last term, playing a big part in their Europa League victory and scoring in the final against Athletic Bilbao.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone made no secret of his desire to be reunited with Diego and a deal was rumoured to be close in the summer. But when the transfer window closed he remained in Germany, despite some Wolfsburg fans expressing their opposition to his presence within the club.

Now the rumours have re-emerged, suggesting a deal could be done in January, but the player claims to know nothing of it.

“We hear a lot about me in Spain, but I can confirm I have not had any contact with Atletico,” he told the German magazine Kicker.

“I'm at Wolfsburg and very grateful for my situation. I just hope I have a good season.”

Wolfsburg are third from bottom in the Bundesliga but have improved since the departure of Felix Magath, who was branded a dictator upon his exit by Diego.

“We are prepared to fight to avoid relegation,” the former Juventus man continued. “I hope we can get into the top four, but we know our situation is complicated. We have to go step by step.”
