Bielsa: I can’t explain Bilbao defeat

Athletic Bilbao boss Marcelo Bielsa said he was struggling to come up with explanations for his team’s 3-2 loss to Lyon.

Goals from Ander Herrera and Aritz Aduriz at San Mames were not enough to give Los Leones their first Europa League Group I win, and Bielsa was at a loss to find the reasons why.

“At some point you have to look at why a team does not sometimes get what it deserves and it’s something I can’t explain,” the Argentine told a Press conference.

“Defeats always get you down but when they are undeserved it is even sadder. It’s not that we defended badly and we were not disorganised.

“Overall we made plenty of goal opportunities and had a lot of the ball but these excuses, when compared with the result, lose their worth.

“The only thing to do is analyse what went wrong and work to correct things so they don’t happen again. It will need tolerance and patience but this will serve to motivate us.”

Bielsa was whistled at by a section of the crowd when he replaced Aduriz with Fernando Llorente and Iker Muniain with Ismael.

“The fans made their feelings known, saying the decisions I made were mistakes and they were the wrong substitutions.

“I can’t say whether the supporters were right and I was wrong, although I can’t say I’m infallible in my decisions,” he admitted.
