Former Spain Under-21 Coach Luis Milla believes that the lack of players making the jump from Real Madrid’s youth team to first team is down to Jose Mourinho.
Milla, who left his position with Spain’s youth after a poor Olympics performance, believes that Real’s policy hinges on their Portuguese Coach and differs greatly from that at Barcelona.
“These club have two different policies. Barcelona has always had the grassroots, has given it much importance and it has worked well,” reflected the 46-year-old today.
“They will continue with it too because it goes so well. Real Madrid has another policy that is managed by their Coach and there are few possibilities for homegrown players.
“They must have a clear policy. From the outside we only see that distance exists between the cantera and the senior team and that the jump to the senior team is very difficult, they are at a level and their Coach never tires of saying, they have a clear stance and cannot accept players from the youth team.
“There are people who appreciate and consider that this is the best thing, but the youth team has to take a step forward, to be strong and have some opportunities to be considered.”
