Pellegrini: Malaga in Milan to win

Malaga Coach Manuel Pellegrini insists his team will not play for a draw against Milan tomorrow night.

Champions League debutants Malaga have a 100 per cent record after three games, are five points clear of Milan at the top of Group C and are yet to concede a goal.

A draw at San Siro would not be a bad result in that context but playing for one is something the Chilean tactician refuses to countenance.

“If a team comes out to draw, they have lost,” Pellegrini declared to journalists in Italy. “Of that I have no doubt. In addition, this team was not made to speculate. We will go out to try and win the three points and qualify.”

The former Villarreal boss was asked what he made of Milan's recent return to form and 5-1 victory over Chievo last Saturday.

“I saw the match. They played a great game and were worthy winners. I've always said they would be the team to beat.

“It's difficult to analyse [whether they have improved]. Surely their victory will have removed pressure, but these are different competitions. We have nine points, and maybe there is more pressure on them.

“The team is upset by the defeat to Rayo Vallecano, because the performance was not adequate.”

Pellegrini also discussed the Rossoneri's history – and whether that would play any part – and the two young stars on show – Isco and Stephan El Shaarawy.

“Malaga have less history, but the history isn't playing. We will show we are competitive. Many looked at us as mere participants, but we have nine points and will look to win the game.”

“El Shaarawy and Isco are great players. A brilliant career awaits them both, and they are critical for their teams.”
