Villa: ‘I’m in great shape’

David Villa says he is happy with his continued progress in returing from serious injury for Barcelona and Spain.

The striker started the game and opened the scoring for the Catalans on Saturday night in their eventual 5-0 win over Rayo Vallecano.

“I’m in great shape, very happy to return to playing, to compete again in games and accumulate the minutes, to score a goal and help with the win,” listed the Spain international to reporters after what was curiously his first appearance at Rayo’s ground.

“It has happened that through various categories and teams that I had not played here before. I’m happy to win, to debut and to score and that everything turned out fine.

“The important thing is to show our desire as a team with our attitude and what we do. Wednesday or Saturday, either one competition or another, win or not, we know that the important thing is the attitude.”

Villa then looked ahead to the Copa del Rey tie on Tuesday against Alaves.

“These are tough games and so we have to be on form. This is the first leg of the Cup so we have to get a result.

“Alaves are a tough team, they have moral through the roof and everyone there will want to beat Barca. It is a difficult tie, but we know this. Afterwards, we will again think about the League.”
