Real Madrid defender Marcelo has gone under the knife in Amsterdam as he begins his recovery from a fractured metatarsal.

The dynamic full-back suffered the injury in training with the Brazilian national side last Sunday, and is expected to be unavailable for selection for three months.

The surgery was carried out by Dr. Van Djik, who has operated on various other footballers including Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo. Real's chief of medical services Carlos Diez was present.
