One-game bans for Betis duo

Real Betis players Damien Perquis and Joel Campbell have both been handed one-game suspensions for their sendings off against Atletico Madrid.

The duo were sent off during their team’s 4-2 home defeat to Atleti on Wednesday night and will now both been unavailable for the side’s trip to Malaga this weekend.

Perquis was dismissed just after half-time for ‘preventing a clear scoring chance’, conceding a penalty for pulling back Radamel Falcao.

The Competition Committee confirmed that it was ‘perfectly reasonable that the match official could understand that, in addition to it being a pulling move likely to prevent an opponent, it was a clear goalscoring opportunity’.

Meanwhile Campbell’s red card for two bookings was also held up by the Committee, who said that from the images studied for the disputed second yellow card, it ‘can be seen clearly that the ball contacts the arm of the player, even if, in fact, there were a number of bounces then between the player booked and his opponent’.

Campbell and Filipe Luis both appeared to inadvertently catch the ball with their arm when Campbell tried to chest down a cross, but only the Costa Rican was booked.

Both Betis President Miguel Guillen and Coach Pepe Mel expressed their dissatisfaction post-match at the quality of the officiating.
