‘Can’t always blame bad luck’

Espanyol defender Joan Capdevila has called his side’s narrow defeat to Real Betis a sad day, but acknowledged it cannot be put down to bad luck.

“It was a sad day, but we cannot continue to chalk it down as bad luck,” stated the former Spanish international in the aftermath of the Catalans’ 1-0 defeat in Betis.

“We have to consider that a dead-ball situation cost us the game, and we can not let that happen again.”

The match leaves Espanyol joint bottom with Osasuna, having picked up one point in five games. Capdevila has stressed the situation has to improve rapidly.

“The season has just started but we have to do more to start picking up points at the earliest moment.

“[Coach Mauricio Pochettino’s suspension] did not have any influence on the team.”
