Mancini: We gave Madrid too much room

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini was disappointed and criticised his team following the 3-2 defeat at Real Madrid.

The Italian felt his players had conceded too much room to the Spanish champions after taking a 2-1 lead with just minutes remaining of their opening Group D Champions League game.

“We played well in the second-half and being in front at the Bernabeu is not easy, but we gave them too much space,” the Italian told assembled reporters.

“The changes we made were forced upon us by Nasri’s injury as we wanted Aguero to get 20 minutes, but the changes prevented that.

“It was strange. We needed to improve the situation but sometimes played with too much depth and after that we allowed them near our area far too easily.

“I wanted us to defend how we did but we made mistakes. We have to play as we did after the break without those mistakes.

“You can lose to a team like Real Madrid yet we did it in three minutes,” said Mancini, who hinted that he blamed goalkeeper Joe Hart.

“I don’t know what happened with the third goal but Hart is the goalkeeper and the last man behind the ball.”
