Jose Mourinho has taken the blame for Real Madrid's disastrous start to the season: “The responsibility for this terrible start to the season lies with me.”

The Merengues go into tomorrow night's Champions League opener against Manchester City low on confidence having won only one of their first four La Liga fixtures.

“The responsibility for this terrible start to the season lies with me,” Mourinho told TVE1. “I've not been able to create a committed group for whom football is the priority.

“Now I have to get the team to be as similar as possible to that of last season and seasons past. Real Madrid can lose, but not the way we've been losing.”

The Portuguese tactician was asked what his players made of his scathing criticism of them after Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Sevilla.

“The monologue I gave to you, I gave to the players. It was not the first time they heard that.”
