Simeone’s role vital says Filipe Luis

Atletico Madrid full-back Filipe Luis said boss Diego Simeone’s role was fundamental following the European Super Cup defeat of Chelsea.

Simeone saw his side dismantle the Champions League winners 4-1 in the final in Monaco and defender Luis [pictured, right] revealed that the Atleti players had emerged from the dressing room with the word ‘winner’ ringing in their ears.

“Cholo [Simeone] has changed me not only as a player but as a person.

“The word ‘winner’ was used more than 50 times in the dressing room before the match. It is a word he uses a lot.

“It’s different to what I learned when I started out as a footballer. He encourages us all the time.

“There is not a single negative thought and he has changed the mentality of the team,” the Brazilian told Canal Plus

Luis also admitted that he feared he might miss the final as he has recently been bothered by niggling injuries.

“I thought I could have been ruled out of the game through injury but in the end I was able to play.

“This is a trophy we value greatly and one with great prestige,” he added.
