Porto defender joins Zaragoza

Real Zaragoza have announced that Porto defender Cristian Sapunaru has joined the club on a three-year contract.

The Romanian international reached an agreement at 10pm local time to rescind his current agreement with the Portuguese club and Zaragoza boss Manolo Jimenez moved swiftly to bring him to La Romareda.

Sapunaru was understood to have been Jimenez’s first choice to reinforce his defence despite an attempt to lure teammate Ibrahima Ba.

Capped nine times by his country, the right-back made his international debut against Montenegro in May 2008 and has played for National Bucharest and Rapid Bucharest, as well as having a loan spell with Callatis Mangalia in the 2003-04 season.

He joined Porto in July 2008 for a reported €2.5m fee and signed a five-year contract.
