Xavi Hernandez says that the best thing about Barcelona’s 5-1 opening day win over Real Sociedad was David Villa’s return and goal.
The striker has been out of action since the end of 2011 after breaking his leg during the FIFA Club World Cup, missed Euro 2012 with Spain and has endured an uncertain pre-season.
However, he came off the bench to net Barca’s fifth goal of the night as they began the League season comfortably over Real Sociedad.
“He has suffered much, had a major injury and is back. The truth is that the best thing has been the return of Villa,” Xavi told reporters post-match, before reflecting on life under Tito Vilanova.
“The gear changes have been very little. All that has changed is the person. Now it is Tito instead of Pep, but the philosophy is the same. We are keeping our illusion intact.
“And we have the best player in the world in Lionel Messi with us. We are glad with the goals and the support tonight. We’ve started on the right foot.”
