Wolfsburg boss Felix Magath says midfielder Diego will stay with the club next season, closing the door on a return to Atletico Madrid.
The Brazilian playmaker spent last term on loan at the Vicente Calderon following a reported fall-out with Magath, helping Los Rojiblancos to Europa League success and a top-six La Liga finish.
However, despite the player having previously intimated he would like a further spell with Diego Simeone’s men, Wolfsburg confirmed via their official website that he would be remaining at the Volkswagen Arena.
“Diego will be staying with Wolfsburg” said a short statement.
Magath, sitting next to the 27-year-old at Press conference, revealed that the differences between the pair have now been resolved.
“It is known that the relationship between us after what happened at Hoffenheim [Diego refused to attend the game after learning he was not in the starting line-up] has been tense, but we have talked about it and everything has been sorted out,” explained Magath.
“We must now look forward. Diego is a Champions League footballer who will increase our chances of finishing higher up the table.
“He is a key player who can create chances for his teammates and score goals.”
For his part, Diego thanked the Bundesliga outfit for giving him a second chance and also revealed he had written a letter to the fans.
“It is important to learn from your mistakes and do things better next time. That is what I want and I hope the fans can forgive me.
“I know I disappointed a lot last time but I have always received a great reception in Wolfsburg. My family and I have always felt comfortable here.
“I have already apologised to the Coach and I’m glad the club and my teammates have given me a second chance,” he added.
