Former striker Christian Vieri has rushed to defend Karim Benzema and hit out at Gary Lineker’s criticism of the Frenchman.
Vieri, a former Italy international who had a stint in La Liga with Atletico Madrid, insisted the English pundit should ‘know better’ after his criticism of Benzema.
“I don't know why Lineker is on television,” Vieri told BeIn Sports USA.
“The thing is that he was a striker, so when a striker doesn't score in two games you're going to kill him? He should know better.”
In response, Lineker posted on Twitter: “He’s on TV to ask questions about football which, surprisingly, involves asking questions about footballers.”
Last month, Benzema said he 'felt sorry' for the BBC and BT Sport following the comments, which stated the Real Madrid striker was 'overrated'.
