Ramos laments 'difficult week'

Sergio Ramos has described a ‘tough week’ for the Spanish national team and particularly Barcelona players following the Catalan situation.

An open training session on Monday was abandoned after just 23 minutes due to derogatory chants and whistles towards Ramos’s international teammate Gerard Pique.

“It has been a tough week for their (Barcelona) players,” Ramos told a press conference.

“In m opinion, we must separate politics from sport as it does not help. I needed to speak with him (Pique) and the Coach (Julen Lopetegui) before coming out and speaking publicl, which is why I did not speak earlier.

“It is not my place to comment on whether people who support Catalan independence can or should be in the national team.

“I hope to live in a country which is free and democratic, we all do, but I knew this would be a difficult week.

“My relationship with Pique is very good, we think differently about things but everyone has the freedom of expression.

“We want a good atmosphere and for the fans to enjoy the game.”

Reports earlier this week suggest an announcement is imminent regarding Ramos and Pique launching a new business together.
