6 La Liga players for Golden Boy award

Six Spanish-based players have been shortlisted for the 2017 Golden Boy award – handed to Europe’s most impressive footballer under the age of 21.

Run by Italian newspaper Tuttosport, 25 of the continent’s most promising young players have been shortlisted for the award which began in 2003.

Espanyol defender Aaron Martin and Real Madrid forward Borja Mayoral are the only two Spaniards on the shortlist, while they are joined by Ousmane Dembele (Barcelona), Emre Mor (Celta Vigo), Theo Hernandez (Real Madrid) and Enes Unal (Villarreal).

Three Spanish-based players have previously won the award – Lionel Messi (2005), Sergio Aguero (2007) and Isco (2012) – while Cesc Fabregas, then at Arsenal, triumphed in 2006.

Last year the award was won by Bayern Munich’s Renato Sanches – now on loan at Swansea City – while the previous years saw Anthony Martial, Raheem Sterling and Paul Pogba lift the trophy.
