Zizou: A match to forget

Zinedine Zidane felt Real Madrid’s 2-1 win against Sporting Gijon was “a game to forget” for his side as “we were lacking a bit in everything”.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s first-half brace ultimately proved enough for Madrid to win a sixth-straight La Liga match and open up a provisional, seven-point lead atop the table.

However, Los Blancos survived Duje Cop’s missed penalty towards the end of the match, prompting Zidane to express his relief that his team held on for the victory.

“It was a difficult game, in which the only good thing was the three points,” the Coach said after the match.

“It’s a game for us to forget because things didn’t go as we wanted them to, but it is what it is.

“We were lacking a bit in everything, but we’re happy for the three points, they’re important.

“The rain? Both teams had to play through it. I have no explanation for why we lacked a bit of everything.

“Pepe? He’s an important player for everyone and the team, and he had a good game after all this time out.”
