‘De Gea must start over Casillas’

Former Spain goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has urged Spain to start with David de Gea, not Iker Casillas, in goal at Euro 2016.

Casillas remains Spain’s first-choice goalkeeper, a status he has kept since the 2002 World Cup – when he capitalised on a freak injury to Canizares involving a bottle of aftershave – but the ex-Valencia custodian believes La Roja have missed a trick by limiting the Manchester United man to sporadic appearances.

"De Gea should have been made the starting goalkeeper a long time ago. He’s performing much better than Casillas,” he told Cadena SER.

“I wouldn’t pick [Casillas] to be a substitute, but there’s no doubt that De Gea must be the No 1.”
