Simeone: Gimenez not to blame

Diego Simeone refused to single out Jose Maria Gimenez’s mistake as the reason for Atletico Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Deportivo La Coruna on Friday.

The Uruguayan defender was pickpocketed by Lucas Perez, who kept his composure to round Jan Oblak and cancel out Tiago Mendes’ opener, resulting in two points dropped for Los Colchoneros, but the Coach preferred to concentrate on his side’s collective failings.

“Whenever there’s a goal for each team, the result is fair because it’s what happened,” he said after the game.

“I leave here with a good feeling. We had a very good first half but retreated too much in the second.

“We failed to do what we did in the first half after the break. [Gimenez’s mistake] was just a small detail.

“The players know these things can happen, but I’d prefer to focus on other things.

“We didn’t have the ball, stopped creating chances and didn’t press enough in the second half.

“The way forward is the path we’re taking. The team leave with an extraordinary first half behind them.”
