Cesc ‘thrilled’ at centenary

Cesc Fabregas has spoken of his excitement at potentially reaching 100 caps for Spain, as well as Euro 2016, Iker Casillas and Gerard Pique.

Fabregas could reach the landmark over the next two internationals, against Luxembourg and Ukraine, and spoke to Radio Marca about the milestone.

“I would be thrilled to reach that figure. I hope I do, and that it is sooner rather than later,” he said.

“100 games in the 10 years since I debuted is a lot. I value it a great deal on my part and the part of the Coaches.

“There are many in this generation who will reach 100 games. Santi Cazorla, Sergio Busquets, David Silva…I won’t be the only one.”

Iker Casillas has already surpassed that total and Fabregas was asked how the captain is doing after leaving Real Madrid for Porto over the summer after getting a rough ride in recent years.

“Pique and I defended Casillas as we would anyone else. We’re a close-knit group. We have to defend each other,” he said.

“I see another side of Iker…and with more hair! He’s happy, calm and relaxed at Porto. They love him there. Confidence is essential. There’s short memories in football today.

“The whistles at Pique? They irritate everyone. Gerard is strong and I support him. Time heals everything and this will pass.”

Spain are on the brink of confirming their place at Euro 2016 and are the reigning champions of the continent, having won in 2008 and 2012, and Cesc is keen to get to succeed in France next year.

“It would be nice if we can keep winning in France, for a third European Championships,” the Chelsea midfielder continued.

“We have a different team now because important people have gone, but there are young people here and we have a good base.”
