Ramos: Let’s talk about Madrid changes

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has discussed his derby error and suggested the discussion should also be on Rafa Benitez’s decisions.

Ramos gave away a penalty against Atletico Madrid only for Keylor Navas to make the save and the game to finish 1-1 when Luciano Vietto cancelled out Karim Benzema’s opener.

“I guess the Coach will say what he has to say when he sees me,” he said, AS reports, referring to some surprise choices by Benitez, the Coach having criticised Ramos for giving away the penalty.

“I’m neither worried nor upset by the penalty. Everyone makes mistakes and no one does it on purpose. Keylor made a great save after and the mistake had nothing to do with the result.

“We all learn from our mistakes, players and Coaches. I’ve learned from mistakes I’ve made throughout my career and it’s not the same for Sergio Ramos or Cristiano Ronaldo. We have more impact.

“It was a child-like error and there’s no getting around it. Keylor ended up making the save and I’m not losing sleep about it. What’s disrupting my sleep is that we didn’t get the three points that would have made us League leaders.”

It was put to Ramos, who on Tuesday pulled out of the Spain squad to play Luxembourg and Ukraine with a shoulder injury, that Madrid sat too far back against Atletico.

“At 1-0 you feel you have the game and instead of playing forward and looking for another goal, unconsciously you defend more,” he acknowledged.

“Maybe that’s what allowed the equaliser. This is Madrid. If we talk about my mistake we could talk about the changes the Coach made.

“Whoever isn’t ready to be here should change their team or maybe their profession.

“We have to draw positive and constructive conclusions. We played a great first half and could have killed off the game, but circumstances didn’t allow it.

“There were complications in the final minutes. Perhaps we lacked the initiative of the first minutes to kill the game and get three points. In the end things were fine but we were too deep.”
