‘Athletic succeeded together’

Athletic Bilbao President Josu Urrutia celebrated the communal nature of the team’s Supercopa de Espana win over Barcelona.

A 4-0 win at San Mames in the first leg was followed by a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou for Los Leones’ first trophy in 31 years.

“The truth is, it’s not easy. Nor is it easy to play the final of the Europa League, to be in the Champions League…and we’ve done it with our players,” Urrutia said, AS reports.

“Together we succeeded. Succeeding know who you are is critical.

“There was a lot going through my head [when the final whistle blew]. I was happy for my people, for my fellow board members, the fans who have suffered so much, the players, the coaching staff…

“This is a very big club and sometimes we forget how lucky we are. This took teamwork and attitude. To beat these teams you also have to catch them not at their best.

“I’m happy for the fans. I hope they enjoy it. And don’t lose the perspective of how special this club is.

“Let’s hope we can remain as competitive as before. It’s a new team, with talented young players, a lot of inexperience, and we’re competing at the highest level.

“Three finals, the Champions League, a trophy…asking for greater competitiveness is difficult, but we’ll try.

“I’ve got a good relationship with Carlos Gurpegui. I’m delighted for him.

“We’ve improved the squad this summer. All our energy was set on achieving this trophy. We’re aware of how to improve this club. Those who come in must be of the profile of the players who have already arrived.

“If nobody comes we’ll continue competing at the same level. If someone comes on August 31 or next year, it will be to improve.”
