Sevilla renew Monchi contract

Monchi has extended his contract at Sevilla, the sporting director now tied down until the summer of 2020.

The club’s official website confirms the transfer guru’s deal will expire on June 30, 2020, and his previous contract had two years remaining on it.

Monchi, a goalkeeper in a playing career spent entirely at Nervion, has been the club’s sporting director since shortly after his retirement as a player. He gave up the game in 1999 and was appointed a year later.

The 46-year-old said recently that this summer has seen 21 transfer deals completed, both players joining and players leaving, with the likes of Steven N’Zonzi, Yevhen Konoplyanka and Mariano signed and Carlos Bacca among those sold.

“I’ve always had something special with Monchi,” Jose Antonio Reyes is quoted as saying regarding the director’s renewal.

“I get along very well with him. He was [at the training ground] today and I congratulated him in person. I’m happy for him and for all of Sevilla.

“Of course he is fundamental to us. I think he’s fundamental to everything at Sevilla.”
