Suarez: ‘I had to leave Liverpool’

Luis Suarez has acknowledged he needed to leave Liverpool in order to stand a chance of winning the Champions League.

The Uruguayan signed for Barcelona last summer and admitted that the prospect of glory in Europe’s premier club competition was a deciding factor in his decision.

“Barcelona are always candidates to win the Champions League and that’s a big plus here,” Suarez told Champions Matchday.

“The clubs I’ve played at before didn’t really have a chance to win big European trophies – maybe a domestic League or Cup.

“Playing in a team such as this, where everyone wants to win every match, is a sign that it’s all about silverware, whether it’s the Champions League, La Liga or whichever trophy is up for grabs. We have a chance of making the final.”

Suarez also spoke of what it has been like fitting in at Barcelona with the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar.

“It’s about adapting to the way they play and the moves they make, while trying to make things easier for them. They are incredible players but you work to try and support the team regardless of who is playing.

“Everybody feels comfortable in their role of helping Messi and Neymar to play their best game,” he explained.
