Former Real Madrid left-back Roberto Carlos is backing the club’s new signing Danilo to be a success at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Porto right-back has joined Los Blancos for a reported €31.5m and will link up with his new teammates this summer, while his fellow Brazilian Carlos [pictured, right] has given his verdict on the 23-year-old.
“I think he’s a good full-back and he’s a lot like Dani Alves,” insisted Carlos in an interview with COPE.
“However, to compare him with Cafu is very difficult because he has won many titles and has been the best right-back in history.
“Danilo is a very good, complete full-back. He’s good in defence and attacks well so I think Madrid have made a great signing because he has a lot of quality.
“He also adapts to things very easily and I’m convinced he’s going to do well.”
Carlos, currently in charge of Turkish outfit Akhisar Belediyspor, also commented on the current Madrid squad and believes they have what it takes to win La Liga, although he is not overly confident of their chances in the Champions League.
“If I had in my team what Madrid have on their bench then I’d be champion every year. The difference between those on the bench and those that start is normal as those on the bench do not have the same form as those playing.
“Even so, La Liga is not over. Barcelona have a great team and they are showing that now, but Madrid are the European champions and have a team that wants to win. If Barca win the League then congratulations, but it will be a fight until the end.
“In the Champions League the second leg of the tie with Atletico Madrid is at the Bernabeu, so with that in mind I’d make Madrid favourites. If the second leg was at the Calderon I’d say the favourites would be Atletico.”
Carlos was asked to give his take on the recent whistles aimed at Cristiano Ronaldo and a possible departure from the club this summer.
“In football it’s very difficult to maintain consistency throughout a full season. But the fans at the Bernabeu have always been this way. They only whistled me once and even then I asked for the ball back to prove them wrong.
“However, I believe Cristiano is happy in Madrid and I think he’ll only leave when his contract runs out. It’s very difficult for [President] Florentino Perez to let him go,” maintained Carlos, who then ran the rule over Gareth Bale.
“I like him very much. Is he greedy? I played with Rivaldo for the national team and thought the same but he helped me to 15 titles, although Bale doesn’t have too many defensive qualities.”
