Former mentor tips Jese resurgence

Former Real Madrid Castilla boss Alberto Toril has tipped Jese Rodriguez to rediscover his best form sooner rather than later.

The forward looked to be progressing well in Los Blancos’ first team until he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a Champions League match against Schalke last March.

Since returning in December, the 22-year-old has been overshadowed by the ‘BBC’, but his old mentor is still backing him to one day realise his potential, providing he gets more minutes under his belt.

“Mentally and physically, he looks good. What he lacks are minutes in the first team, which is the only way he can pick up the pace,” Toril told AS.

“If he doesn’t play, it’ll be difficult for him to rediscover his best form.

“Sometimes when you experience unfavourable situations, they demand more of you [to return to your best].

“When he gets a sustained run of games, he’ll return. I also think that the right wing is his worst position.

“He was on his way to the top and should still make it. He had the curse of a long injury, but he remains focused on his football.

“When he returns to his usual level, he’ll be among the best [in the world again]. It’s up to him [whether he will rediscover his best form at Madrid or elsewhere].

“He’d like to stay at Madrid, but he also has the ambition to play regularly. He’ll decide [his future] in June.

“He knows that the BBC play practically forever, but at the end of the day a season is 70 games long and there’s time for everyone to play.

“[Carlo] Ancelotti will have his arguments [against squad rotation], but in doing so a player can relax [too much].”
