‘No one as committed as Costa’

Juanfran has come to the defence of former Atletico Madrid teammate Diego Costa amid accusations he lacks commitment to Spain.

Costa isn’t part of the Spain squad to play Belarus and Germany after Vicente del Bosque chose to leave the Chelsea striker at home so he can regain some fitness.

It has been suggested that Costa isn’t willing to sacrifice for La Roja but Juanfran, who has been in contact with the striker, insists such claims are nonsense.

“It’s not true to say there’s no commitment. We’re in contact every so often and he is proud and happy to be on the team,” Juanfran says, according to AS.

“He knew how hard it would be on his family [choosing Spain over Brazil] and they have struggled because of it. Imagine Spain played Brazil and we won…

“I’m sure if he had chosen to go with Brazil Scolari would have called him up and played Fred. He is 100% committed to the national team.

“He has been here when he’s not fit and wanted to play. I’ve not seen many players as committed as him.

“Remember the Champions League final? He just needs a vote of confidence. Diego is very committed to Spain and remains so.”

Juanfran also touched on another former Atletico player – Filipe Luis, who, like Costa, moved to Chelsea over the summer.

“Filipe is an example. He decided to try another experience and that has to be respected,” he said of the left-back.

“He’s left but we got a lot of new players in and we’re happy.”

Regarding the national team, Juanfran added that the style that had brought success to Spain would be maintained whoever was called up.

“The style of the team will be kept even without Cesc, Xabi Alonso or Xavi Hernandez,” he predicted.

“We have Cazorla, Isco, Nolito, Sergio Busquets…maybe there are some different things but we have players who can score and are good with the ball.

“Any player from another team would certainly say we’re a great team.”
