Mourinho: Costa needs special care

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has asked Spain to take ‘special care’ of Diego Costa the next time he is called up for international duty.

The fitness of Costa and La Roja’s handling of the former Atletico Madrid striker has been a point of contention between Chelsea and Spain after Costa suffered an injury while playing under Vicente Del Bosque.

Mourinho criticised Spain for their handling of Costa and he hasn’t played since Spain’s last outing, against Luxembourg, in which he scored his first goal for his adopted country.

“It’s not my call, not my decision. I’m not going to get in the middle and stop him going,” AS reports Mourinho replying when asked about the potential of Spain again calling Costa.

“Again, he needs to be treated with special care. That’s what we’re going to do. That’s all I can do.

“I always support the players in playing for their countries when they’re fit enough to do so and when the national team show the same kind of care to recover from the problems they have.”

Del Bosque will next week name the squad to play Belarus in a Euro 2016 qualifier and World Cup holders Germany three days later.
