‘Bilbao a great Euro 2020 host’

President of the Sports Council, Miguel Cardenal, has congratulated the city of Bilbao after Athletic Bilbao’s San Mames was named a Euro 2020 host city.

San Mames is one of 13 host cities and will hold three group games and a round of 16 tie, with the semi-finals and final to be played at Wembley.

Other tournament matches will be held in far-flung locations such as Dublin, Munich and Baku in the first-ever pan-European staging of the competition.

“Bilbao is ideal and meets all the requirements to be a fantastic venue,” Cardenal said, according to AS.

“A modern, interesting city which already receives millions of tourists, it will again show how to organise a sporting event gives worldwide exposure to the city.

“It was recently seen with the European basketball and the thousands of Finns who travelled to Bilbao.

“San Mames is an impressive stadium and the award is deserved for all those who love football.”
