Del Bosque: Fans still support Spain

Vicente Del Bosque believes Spain retain the support of the fans despite their World Cup disappointment and wants to repay their backing.

La Roja get their Euro 2016 qualification campaign underway tonight against Macedonia, with Levante’s Ciutat de Valencia hosting the fixture.

Speaking at a pre-match Press conference, Del Bosque touched on the need to perform better than they did over the summer, and called for more goals after drawing a blank in a friendly defeat to France.

“I feel that Spain still has the affection of the people despite the World Cup and now we can reinforce that affection on the pitch with the best performance possible,” the Coach said, according to AS.

“I don’t want to talk publically about what needs to be improved but it is a fact that in Paris, although we created chances, we didn’t get shots on target.

“We need more depth and Macedonia is a good opportunity to try. We have to improve on that.”

He added that after failing to get past the group stage in Brazil there is a great deal of confidence-building that needs to be done.

“We’re still dragging the penalty of the first two World Cup games [against the Netherlands and Chile],” Del Bosque continued.

“Against Australia, in the third game, we recovered good habits, but the matches against the Netherlands and Chile weigh us down.

“We are athletes and we must look forward. We have to forget that and restore confidence.”
