Atletico Madrid captain Gabi has downplayed comparisons between his style and that of Coach Diego Simeone.
Gabi skippered Atletico to victory in the League last season and in an interview with AS ahead of the new season it was put to him that he is to this generation of fans what Simeone was to a previous generation, during his days as an Atletico player.
“I consider myself a different player from Cholo,” Gabi replied.
“The Coach was very important to Atletico in his characteristics and qualities. Maybe my character and the way I live football are things he conveyed.
“The Coach and I understand each other perfectly for how we see football and I try to help in any way I can.
“I don’t think I’m an example for everyone. It’s true that I do my best. I consider myself a great athlete and every day I want to do better for everyone wearing this shirt and all the fans who support us.
“I’m proud to be here and to be able to defend these colours on the pitch. I am privileged to be here, to play at Atletico.”
