CONMEBOL warned about Suarez case

FIFA have told CONMEBOL not to get involved in the case against Barcelona forward Luis Suarez.

The South American governing body recently made public their support for the Uruguay international in his appeal against the four-month ban from all football for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup.

But Marca reports a reply from FIFA in which the world governing body advised CONMEBOL to respect the independence of the punishments committee after CONMEBOL protested the suspension was too harsh.

“The secretary general is not in a position to intervene, comment or take any action to influence decisions,” FIFA noted.

“Remember that the courts of FIFA enjoy absolute independence for their decisions and in particular have not received instruction from other agencies.

“Also, in this particular case, we reiterate that the courts are composed in such a way that all its members have the knowledge, abilities and experience required for the specific performance of the office to which they have been elected by the FIFA congress.”

Suarez and the Uruguayan federation have had an appeal rejected and are to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
