‘Suarez ban makes no sense’

A Barcelona-based lawyer has criticised the ban handed down by FIFA to Luis Suarez for biting Giorgio Chiellini.

Suarez was a Liverpool player at the time of the incident with the Italy defender and was banned for nine international games and four months from all football.

He has since completed a move to Barcelona but the suspension stands and prevents the Uruguay international training with his new teammates or attending a Press conference to unveil him as a Barca player.

But Mundo Deportivo has reported sports lawyer Xavier Albert Canal as predicting the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS] will intervene and relax the forward’s ban.

“Before the season starts I think CAS will be prudential for Barca,” Canal said.

“It makes no sense that Suarez can’t train or be present [at the Press conference]. You can’t stop a person from conducting his business.

“You can punish, he can’t play, but what they can’t do is prevent his activities. It’s absurd.

“We’re accustomed to some strange decisions from FIFA. The penalty could even be reduced.”
