David Villa has not completely given up on playing for Spain in the future, but admits it will be difficult to be called up.
The veteran goalscorer netted on what many thought was his final appearance for La Roja on Monday, as they beat Australia 3-0.
But the striker has insisted that he would love to carry on, but concedes his age and new club make that hard.
“I've always said that I love the national side and I've always dreamed about them,” he told reporters.
“I'd play until I'm 55 but it's impossible and you have to be realistic. I've taken the decision to go to the MLS, and I'll not compete for a few months, which makes it difficult to carry on.
“Then, after these six months, we'll see. If the boss wants me back, brilliant, but it's difficult and we have to be realistic.
“To play with the national team has been great. After the first games where the other sides were better we've shown some face. That's how it has been.
“I’m happy to have scored. We go quite sad, but at least we've given an account of ourselves.”
With 59 goals, Villa is the national team’s all-time leading goalscorer – a record he hopes gets broken.
“Hopefully it's only a couple of years before it's beaten, that would be great for the side.
“It would be a sense of pride that someone overtook me because I'll always be in the history of the national team.”
