Ronaldo: Casillas must fight

Ronaldo has commented that Iker Casillas faces ‘great competition’ unlike before in Diego Lopez, so he must fight to earn his place at Real Madrid.

The goalkeeper is currently behind Lopez in the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu and has been since his colleague’s return to the club last January.

For former teammate Ronaldo, it is a situation he has not seen Casillas in before.

“Casillas is in a delicate situation,” commented the 37-year-old to reporters today at a publicity event.

“He has not faced great competition like this before, but he is one of the best goalkeepers in history and so he has to earn his place.

“I also had Diego Lopez training alongside me [at Madrid] and he is very good. For Ancelotti, there is no trouble in picking between them.”

Ronaldo was asked of Gareth Bale’s arrival at Real Madrid, which was for a fee of between €90m and €100m.

“There is much hope around him, I will follow him and I hope he has a very good season. Talking about money is easy, but how much money is paid does not matter more than the quality of the player.

“One is worth what they deserve to be, what matters is what he does to enforce it.”

Last week saw the Brazilian call into question Real Madrid’s decision to release Vicente del Bosque in 2003.

“It’s been many years, I’ve never questioned the decisions of a President or the directors. I have always tried to do my job, whilst I got along with Vicente very well and I have a good relationship with Florentino Perez.”
