‘I’ll always be by Casillas’ side’

Vicente del Bosque has made clear that he is ‘against no-one’ in Iker Casillas’ case, but that the Real Madrid ‘keeper ‘will always have me by his side’.

Del Bosque has once more called up the 32-year-old to the Spanish national team, despite his continued absence from the Madrid starting line-up, which is even with a change of Coach at the Santiago Bernabeu over the summer.

For La Roja’s tactician, separating club and country for Casillas continues.

“I do not say, nor direct, that Iker Casillas has to play in Madrid. I would not think to say something,” Del Bosque reflected in conversation with AS.

“What I do, and will do, is defend. I do so because Casillas is the captain of La Seleccion and an important part.

“This does not mean that I’m against anyone, but I am in favour of Casillas. In favour of his history, of his trajectory.

“Iker Casillas will always have me by his side. He is going through a bad time and needs the support of those who have respect and admiration.

“It is not a comfortable situation for anyone, but mostly it is uncomfortable for him. Having said all that, I insist that I am not going against anyone, only in favour of Casillas.”
