Spain seal Haiti friendly win

Spain continued their preparations for the Confederations Cup with a 2-1 friendly win over Haiti in Miami.

La Roja, however, were not at their best as they fielded a side missing Barcelona players Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta.

Even so, the Spanish started in typical fashion as they dominated possession and it took them just eight minutes to get their noses in front, Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla finding the bottom corner with a long-range effort.

Cesc Fabregas doubled the lead on 19 minutes when he headed over the onrushing goalkeeper after getting on the end of Juan Mata’s through ball.

Mata and Jesus Navas both went close after that but Haiti ended the opening 45 minutes without conceding any further goals as they hung on thanks to some dogged defending.

After the break substitute Roberto Soldado, who also clipped the post twice, missed an opportunity to extend the lead when he shot wide in a one-on-one situation, and the World Champions were made to pay for the error 15 minutes from time when Haiti got themselves back into the game.

A mistake in the Spanish defence allowed Donald Guerrier Wilde to beat the offside trap and take the ball round Pepe Reina before firing into an empty net, sending the 36,000 crowd in the Sun Life Stadium into raptures.

Nonetheless, it was the signal for Spain see out the rest of the game quite comfortably as they kept the ball and reduced their opponents to the occasional counter-attack.
