Barcelona, Real Madrid want Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk

Real Madrid and Barcelona are both eyeing a deal for Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk, according to Diario AS.

The Netherlands international has grown into one of the best central defenders in world football since his switch to Anfield from Southampton in January 2018.

That was an eye-watering £75m – a world record transfer for a defender until Harry Maguire joined Manchester United for £80m this summer.

Van Dijk has been instrumental for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the time since – helping them reach two Champions League finals, including the victory over Tottenham earlier this year.

The former Celtic defender has won a plethora of personal awards for his fine performances, and the Daily Mirror reported earlier this month that he had penned a new deal at the Reds until 2025.

However, no official announcement on a renewal has arrived and the latest report claims that both Los Blancos and the Blaugrana are keen on a landmark deal.
