Santiago Canizares criticised for Jose Reyes comments

Former Spanish international Santiago Canizares has been criticised following comments made about Jose Reyes.

35-year old former Sevilla forward Reyes died on June 1, following a fatal car crash close to his home town Utera, however Canizares stated that the circumstances surrounding the crash mean Reyes does not deserve the acclaim he has received.

"To be speeding is something to be condemned.

"There were other victims in this crash other than the driver.

"Reyes does not deserve to be treated as a hero, although this doesn't make what happened regrettable – and I will pray for his soul."

Spanish authorities have confirmed that Reyes was driving at 193kmph when the crash occurred, with one passenger also killed and one seriously injured.

Canizares, who played with Reyes for La Roja between 2003 and 2006, has been widely criticised on social media following his comments, however he has retained his stance on the incident.
