Seville rivals reach Europa League

Real Betis and Sevilla have both qualified for next season’s Europa League after playing out a 2-2 draw in Saturday’s derby.

Sevilla needed to better Getafe’s result in order to secure at least seventh place, which would have been enough for the second qualifying round.

The visitors made a dismal start when Marc Bartra opened the scoring inside five minutes, but Wissam Ben Yedder and Simon Kjaer appeared to have turned the game around in their side’s favour.

However, Loren Moren’s seventh League goal since February rescued Betis a point and ensured they finished above their city rivals for the first time in five years.

“We had a different game to the one we expected, but ultimately we’ve achieved our objective,” Betis boss Quique Setien said after the match.

“We had our moments in the second half, but perhaps it’s the right result.”

On the other hand, Sevilla caretaker Joaquin Caparros noted: “We dropped two points because we were much better than them.

“I’m happy with the players, but it’s a shame that we drew. Still, we’ve qualified for the Europa League after a very complicated situation, so I’m very happy.”

Caparros’ side cannot venture beyond seventh in La Liga as Villarreal’s 4-2 win at Deportivo La Coruna assured them of a top-six place.
