Malaga slump to sixth defeat

Malaga boss Jose Gonzalez insists he will not resign, despite leading the basement boys to a sixth straight defeat.

Gonzalez began his Malaga reign with back-to-back draws but has failed to add to their tally since the end of January, Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Leganes keeping the Andalusians bottom of La Liga, eight points adrift of safety.

“I’m surprised by today’s match,” the former Granada Coach said after the game.

“We had the right mentality but didn’t play with enough pace. We competed well at times, but we’re not happy with the game we had.

“I’m not going to resign, we did well against Valencia midweek and deserved more from many other games.

“This is the first game that we didn’t deserve to score in. Lega had two more gears than us.

“Their first goal was offside, but we still deserved to lose and we’re not going anywhere like this.

“Still, we won’t stop believing in survival. Our rivals are letting us have a chance. We shouldn’t have any on 13 points, but given there are so few points left to be won, we have to grab them.”
